ENGLISH 10H – SECOND QUARTER:          BUILDING SENTENCES #1

 

Look at the picture and see the examples below.  Refer to your handouts on “Phrases” and “Basic Sentence Parts and Conjunctions Definitions.”

 

 

1.  Write an independent clause of 3-5 words. Use an active verb.

2.  Add a proper noun, capitalized, to the sentence.

3.  Add an appropriately placed adverb to the sentence.

4.  Add a prepositional phrase to the sentence.

5.  Add an appropriately placed participle to the prepositional phrase.

6.  Add an introductory participial phrase correctly set off with a comma.

 

EXAMPLES:

1.  The corpse rises.

2.  The corpse of Bael rises.

3.  The corpse of Bael rises slowly.

4.  The corpse of Bael rises slowly from its sarcophagus.

5.  The corpse of Bael rises slowly from its rotting sarcophagus.

6.  Smelling of sulfur and death, the corpse of Bael rises slowly from its rotting sarcophagus.
